PLANT

Planting Process (December - March)

  1. Identify sources of high quality planting stock.
  2. Soak cuttings in water for at least 12 hours before planting.
  3. Planting should not occur until subsoil trench has filled with moist soil.
  4. Plant one cutting at each intersection of the mark-off rows and the subsoil trenches. (12 x 12 spacing)
  5. No more than 4 inches of the cutting should show above the top of the soil in the trench.
  6. Apply a pre-emergence herbicide treatment after planting but before bud break. (The pre-emergence treatment will kill winter vegetation and hold spring vegetation, giving the cottonwoods a good start in growth.)
